Disneyland Halloween Time 2017 Special Food – Part I of III

Disneyland Halloween Time 2017 Special Food – Part I of III

During this time of year, our Disney trips are centered around all the Disneyland Halloween Time 2017 Special Food, and Disney has cooked up a very long list of Treats and Eats Galore. Almost every dining location has something spooktacular! This year they also dressed up Disney California Adventure and really went all out with the special themed food. It will definitely be an adventure to try them all!

In addition to all the Halloween food, we also ate some regular menu items. To make it easy, the Halloween food will be in orange, and the regular items will be in purple.

We started the day at Disneyland and enjoyed Dreamsicle Beignets from the Mint Julep Bar while we waited to be seated at Cafe Orleans. This is a popular restaurant so we were really lucky to get a seat as a walk-up. Lunch at Cafe Orleans included Chicken Gumbo, Shrimp and Grits, and Steak and Potatoes. We also picked up a Mickey Pumpkin Popcorn Bucket and refilled our Villains Annual Pass Holder Popcorn Bucket so we snacked on some popcorn before the food came.

It was super crowded at Disneyland so after a couple rides we decided to head over to Disney California Adventure to take in all their Halloween decorations. noad

Check out the brand new Oogie Boogie entrance! I think it looks awesome both during the day and night. I absolutely love it. I think it is the best display of either park. noad

It was definitely busy inside DCA as well with all the new Halloween stuff. They should have done this years ago! The weather was hot so it was a perfect time for the Bat Wing Raspberry Sundae from Clarabelle’s Hand Scooped Ice Cream on Buena Vista Street. We then spent the afternoon walking around and going on a couple more rides. We ended the evening with dinner at Flo’s V-8 Cafe inside Cars Land, and we were again really lucky to get one of the last two Car-achnid Pot Pie that were available at the time. Otherwise it was going to be another 30 min wait, and they didn’t allow us to pre-order so we’d have had to check back at a later time. We also ordered a regular menu item – BBQ Pork Ribs.

Dreamsicle Beignets (Halloween Special)

Rating: 3.5/5
Price: $7.49 for 6
Location: Mint Julep Bar (Inside French Market) | New Orleans Square (Disneyland)

These are really similar to the special lemon flavored Pirates of the Caribbean and blueberry flavored Fantasmic themed they had earlier this year. Instead of the usual powdered sugar, they are dusted with granulated orange sugar that tasted like orange creamsicles (hence the name – Dreamsicle), and sprinkled with gold stars and dots. The beignets are relatively large – I would say about 4-5 inches across, but they are not the softest or fluffiest. Actually, they are usually kind of deflated and smushed, and hallow in the middle. Also, as you can see from the photos, they are not evenly coated. The big sugar crystals just don’t stick well once the beignets are somewhat cooled. The regular powdered sugar coats much better. Also, they are extremely greasy and do not reheat (toaster oven) well…so I don’t really recommend taking them home.

Even with all their faults, we still enjoyed them very much. We just love beignets. And we are suckers for special flavors.

If you want really good beignets, Ralph Brennan’s Jazz Kitchen Express in Downtown Disney has the best ones in the resort. They are smaller and not Mickey shaped, but are super poofy and soft and completely buried in powdered sugar. Cafe Orleans’ beignets also looked super fluffy, but we have not tried them.

Shrimp and Grits (Halloween Special)

Rating: 4/5
Price: $21
Location: Cafe Orleans | New Orleans Square (Disneyland)

This is a very tasty dish. It comes with 6 large sized shrimp. The cheesy grits are very creamy with a nice texture. The sausages are almost charred which gave it a nice extra smokey flavor. The fava bean-corn relish is delicious as well. My only complaint is the shrimp sauce – while the flavor is good, it is a bit salty for me. I would prefer 15% less salt. noad

Chicken Gumbo (Regular Menu)

Rating: 5/5
Location: Cafe Orleans | New Orleans Square (Disneyland)

Disneyland has some of the best gumbo. They serve quite a few different versions throughout the park and the best by far is served at Blue Bayou. With that said, we loved this gumbo. It actually tastes very similar to the one served inside Blue Bayou, and just like Blue Bayou, it only comes in once size – a small cup. Unlike Blue Bayou, however, I believe it doesn’t have okras, which is a plus for us.

Steak and Potatoes (Regular Menu)

Rating: 5/5
Cost: $22
Location: Cafe Orleans | New Orleans Square (Disneyland)

This is another great dish. The flat iron steak is very flavorful and tender, and the mashed potatoes are nice and creamy. The grilled veggies include carrots, brussel sprouts, and onions – all cooked and seasoned perfectly. The beer molasses sauce has a nice rich, sweet flavor and is not too salty, much better than the shrimp sauce above.

Here are the menus for Cafe Orleans. I really liked the triangular crayons that came with the kids menu. noad

Mickey Pumpkin Popcorn Bucket (Halloween Special)

Of course we have to have the Mickey Pumpkin Popcorn Bucket. It is super cute and they fill it until it’s overflowing! A bonus they did was adding the strap, which reminds me of the famous popcorn buckets from Tokyo Disneyland. We always wondered why they don’t do straps here. They are so much better and easier to carry than the handles.

I believe the only other buckets that had a strap are the Tie Fighter, Oogi Boogie (pictured below) and Cinderella carriage popcorn bucket. Hopefully all ther future buckets will have the strap too.

We did not purchase the Oogie Boogie Popcorn Bucket, but here is a photo of an army of them waiting to be sold.

We also brought our Villains Annual Pass Holder Bucket so we can get our $1 refills. These pass holder buckets seal really well and keep the popcorn fresh for well over a week. The Mickey Pumpkin bucket is not airtight at all.

Bat Wing Raspberry Sundae (Halloween Special)

Rating: 2.5/5
Price: $5.99
Location: Clarabelle’s Hand Scooped Ice Cream | Buena Vista Street (Disney California Adventure)

The sundae looks cool, but I can’t say I am a fan. The ice cream itself is really good, but that is all I liked. To be fair though, I don’t like chocolate, and there was a lot of it. I also don’t like sprinkles, and well, the photo does not do the amount of sprinkles justice. So yeah, if you love chocolate and sprinkles, then I guess this is a good sundae for you. Also, the ice cream-to-everything else ratio was pretty terrible. It was not worth it for me.

Car-Achnid Pot Pie (Halloween Special)

Flo’s V-8 Cafe Car-achnid Pot Pie

Rating: 3/5
Price: $11.99
Location: Flo’s V-8 Cafe | Cars Land (Disney California Adventure)

If you look closely, there is a car-achnid on top of the pot pie. I’ve seen photos of more prominent ones. This one kind of sunk in. At first bite it is delicious. The crust is perfectly cooked and you will not be disappointed with the crust to filling ratio. It is really rosemary-y. The filling is good – I believe it has chicken, celery, onions, and cranberry. However, halfway through, the creaminess may become too much. It is also a tiny bit sweet, probably due to the cranberry… I probably prefer it a tad bit less sweet. The coleslaw is normal, and works well with the heavy pot pie.

Rating: 4/5
Price: $13.99

The ribs are good. The mashed potatoes are good. It normally comes with coleslaw but we substituted for the mac n cheese instead, which is good. Everything about this dish is normal and tasty. Nothing spectacular, but good.
